The stylish ways to wear sweatpants

I am not going to lie. I used to think the jogger pant as “a sign of defeat” that you would secretly put on a cold Sunday evening while eating a pot of ice cream. After many dubious attempts of making the item more fashionable, brands now seem to have finally found the right balance between casual and aesthetics. With better cuts and new fabrics offered by high street shops, you can now proudly pull the sweatpants off in public.

On this occasion I have opted for a `sporty-rock’ version with a faux leather sweatpants and trainers but here are other ideas to elevate them.

 Make them smart

Dress your sweatpants up with a well fitted blouse or shirt. Add a nice pair of stilettos and your boss will not even notice your casual piece.

Make them sexy

Yes they can. With the right outfit. Try a silk or faux leather sweatpants with a crop top or a cold shoulder top. Finish off the look with sandal heels and you’re good to go for a date or a night out.

Make them sporty chic

Sweatpants are the ultimate in casual wear so why not keeping it simple and chic with a pair of white Adidas or Converse. Layer up with a trench coat and voila!

Make them festive

All right, this one is probably not for everyone but experimentation is key.  Why not turning your jogger pants into a party outfit? Swap your bomber jacket for a faux fur coat and team with a pair of sandals for an unexpected and feminine twist.

Don’t forget the essentials

Whether you go for the smart, sexy, edgy or sporty look, make sure that you always:

  • Choose sweatpants that compliment your curves with a slim cut. Leave the large baggy pants to your boyfriend. These will look more flattering on him.
  • Pick the best fabrics. Whether it’s the classic fleece, suede, leather, or satin, make sure you always choose the best fabrics for a more sophisticated look.
  • Get your hair and makeup done to avoid looking like you just rolled out of bed. A bold red lipstick and waves in your hair will instantly elevate your look.
  • Wear neat clothing and shoes. Whether you pair your sweats with boots, sandals or trainers, make sure these are always clean and neat. Remember, you are fighting against the image that sweatpants are for slobs. Avoid anything that slide into the stereotype that you don’t care about your outfit (ie: wearing sweatpants with flip flops).
